Sara visits the Darebin International Sports Centre not only to try her hand at lawn bowls, but to talk to Edward Manuel and Jane Trengove from VICNORD (03) 9489 2999 about their work to improve accessible recreation for people with disabilities, and the Companion Card.

Our show depicted people in wheelchairs bowling at the new DISC facility with narrow tyres, but this occurred due to an oversight on our part. We've since been advised that bowling from a chair with narrow wheels is not allowed in Victoria, due to the damage that this can cause to the greens.  Narrow tyres can also damage the carpet underlay on indoor bowls greens which is very expensive to replace.   Anyone trying to bowl with narrow wheels can and will be asked to leave the bowling green.  Once a centre has been damaged they are loathe to have wheelies back so it is important to leave the greens in an excellent condition.

But don't let that deter you from what is a great sport and social activity.  Get the full information about playing lawn bowls (and the correct equipment that must be used) from Wayne and Wendy Odgers, who between them are the President, Secretary and Treasurer of the Wheelchair Lawn Bowls Section at Wheelchair Sports Victoria.  Wayne and Wendy are both Wheelchair Lawn Bowls athletes and have played at interstate and international level.  They have spent years, along with WSV, educating people with disbilities on the correct tyres and wheels for their bowls chairs.  Wayne and Wendy may be contacted at wendyway@alphalink.com.au or on 0413 480 364 or 0411 777 431.  They are also listed in the Lawn Bowls Information Guide.
