Pic of Tim Matthews, an elite athlete with a disability

Episode 71 - Premieres Monday 20 March 2006

Hosts: Stella Young , Sara McQueenie and George Taleporos

Among the swell of excitement flooding Melbourne during the Commonwealth Games our hosts profile Tim Matthews, an elite athlete with a disability who will be going-for-gold in the sprint events at the games.

Our hosts catch up with Jason Helwig, National Manager of the Australian Paralympic Committee, to discuss the Talent Identification Program. About 35 talent-search days are held around Australia to spot young people with disabilities who show sporting talent. They are then matched with coaches and supported to undertake specialist training.

Our panelist Dr. George checks out the newly constructed Melbourne Mobility Centre based at Federation Square, which offers equipment for hire, information about the city, and a place to charge wheelchair batteries and connect to public transport. While the Mobility Centre gets the thumbs up from Dr. George, he's not so sure about the infrastructure at Federation Square particularly the elevator that takes him hostage. Melbourne Mobility Centre can be contacted on (03) 9650 6499 or found online at www.melbournemobilitycentre.com.au

Macca shocases the 'Rainrider' scooter on Gadget of the week - a funky weatherproof scooter that is water and sun proof and leaves Stella with mobility aid envy.
