Episode 72 - Premieres Monday 27 March 2006
Hosts: Sara McQueenie, George Taleporos and Stella Young
With the recent media exposure about physical access - thanks to the Westfield Shopping Centre 'crawl to the car' incident - our hosts discuss access to shopping.
This week Dr. George tackles physical access on Chapel Street - a shopping strip famous for fashion, glamour and steps! It's not too uncommon for people to feel locked out of the fast-changing fashion trends boasted on glamorous Chapel Street, but for wheelchair users there are few opportunities to even get a foot in the door. While on the prowl for a new pair of runners Dr. George demonstrates the challenges of inaccessible shopfronts. He chats to the City of Stonnington Mayor, Cr. Anne O'Shea, about the local government's disability access policy, which she says has its 'hands tied' by State and Federal legislation.
Macca showcases a walking stick and crutches with extra bounce on Gadget of the Week. The walking aids have a 'sure foot' - a flat base that transfers weight as you walk to reduce pressure on your wrist or shoulder.
And with Youth Week coming up next week the Lovelorns contemplate the tough world young people face and propose a survival kit to protect them from negative community forces.
