Pic of Stella speaking to Amilia Thio, Victoria's National Youth Week Member

Episode 73 - Premieres Monday 3 April 2006

Hosts: George Taleporos, Stella Young and Sara McQueenie

It's National Youth Week and our hosts reflect on the experience of growing up with a disability. In addition to pressures encountered by most young people, having a disability can further contribute to teenage angst - from taking time out of school for on-going medial aid to facing peer and classroom exclusion.

This week Stella catches up with Amilia Thio who is Victoria's National Youth Week Member. At 24, Amilia is well aware of some of the hurdles young people with a disability face on the way to achieving their goals. Amilia faced months of unemployment after completing her studies in Political Science at Melbourne University in 2004. The experience has made her determined to raise awareness of young people's issues and to influence government policies relating to young people. Stella also catches up with Hon. Jacinta Allen, State Minister for Youth Affairs and Employment who discusses Victoria's youth participation policy.

In the studio our hosts chat to Georgie Ferrari from the Youth Affairs Council of Victoria & Jen Anderson from the Disability Discrimination Legal Service who have joined forces with Youth Law and the Department of Human Services to launch a new advocacy service for young people with a disability.

On Gadget of the Week Macca showcases a wheel chair that is possibly the most portable in the world and looses a slab of Crownies on a bet that it cannot be assembled in less than a minute.

And we showcase a short animation by Ann Chibnal, a young person from Future Films in Ballarat, which is a program that supports youth with intellectual disabilities to produce videos.
